Gate 64 — Confusion
Gate 64, “Confusion,” is a Head Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 64
A Head Center gate tied to a flow of images from past experience. It gives a rich visual memory; the trap is trying to sort out the confusion at once instead of letting it clear up.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Head Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 64, Wei Ji.
- Position on the wheel: from 11°22′30″ Virgo to 17°00′ Virgo.
- The Sun in Gate 64: roughly from September 3 to 9 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 40 comes before it, Gate 47 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 64
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 64.4.
- Line 1: A Wet Tail. The first line wants to sort out right away everything that surfaces in memory. In the system, haste lets it down here: before drawing conclusions, it should study the conditions; the trap is acting on a half-formed image.
- Line 2: Holding Back the Cart. The second line can wait out confusion without trying to untangle it by force. In stillness, images are thought to come together into a picture on their own, and others notice its readiness when it has truly ripened.
- Line 3: Crossing With Help. The third line often tries to get out of a muddle with one push and gets burned. Experience tells it that its own strength is not enough: it is worth bringing in other people or new means, and then the crossing becomes possible.
- Line 4: Persistence Halfway Across. The fourth line is able to clarify what is vague long and patiently and eventually come out into clarity. In the system, the support of its circle helps it stay the course; the risk is doubting itself midway and abandoning what it started.
- Line 5: An Honest Light. The fifth line is expected to bring clarity to the general confusion. In the system, it succeeds when it openly shows its train of thought; the trap is passing off a vague guess as a final decision.
- Line 6: Celebrating With a Clear Head. Having lived through confusion and waited for clarity, the sixth line knows how to calmly enjoy the result. Its example is confidence without complacency: get too carried away by triumph, and the clarity it found slips away again.
Channels
Gate 64 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 47-64 “Abstraction” — the partner gate is 47 “Realization” in the Ajna. The channel gives a mind that sorts through images of the past and tries to find meaning in them. Understanding is thought to come on its own once the pressure to figure things out immediately goes away.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.

How do I know if I have Gate 64?
Build your chart in the Human Design calculator: in the list of activations, each gate is written with its line after a dot — for example, 64.3 means Gate 64, line 3. If Gate 64 isn't on the list, it is open in your chart.
How is Gate 64 related to the I Ching hexagram?
