Gate 61 — Mystery
Gate 61, “Mystery,” is a Head Center gate. Below: what it means according to the Human Design system, its six lines, the channel it belongs to and when the Sun passes through it. The chart calculator will show whether you have it.
Meaning of Gate 61
A Head Center gate tied to the pressure to know the unknown and find inner truth. It gives inspiration and a pull toward big questions; the trap is tormenting yourself with questions that have no answer.
In the system, a gate is always at work if it is active in the chart — at the moment of birth (Personality) or about 88 days before it (Design). If the other gate of its channel is also active, the channel is defined, and the theme of the gate becomes part of the person’s consistent energy.
Where the Gate Sits
- Center: Head Center.
- I Ching hexagram: hexagram 61, Zhong Fu.
- Position on the wheel: from 20°45′ Capricorn to 26°22′30″ Capricorn.
- The Sun in Gate 61: roughly from January 11 to 16 (the dates shift by a day from year to year).
- Neighbors on the wheel: Gate 54 comes before it, Gate 60 after it.
The Six Lines of Gate 61
Each gate is divided into six lines. The line shows how the gate's theme plays out in a particular person; in the chart it is written after the dot — for example, 61.4.
- Line 1: Inner Readiness. The first line looks for answers to big questions while relying on its own stable foundation. In the system, its search is fruitful as long as it stays true to itself; the trap is grasping at other people's secret teachings and losing inner peace.
- Line 2: A Response From the Shadows. The second line doesn't look for listeners, but its insights find those who respond on their own. Its inner truth is thought to sound quietly and all the more convincingly for it; the weak spot is hiding inspiration, thinking no one needs it.
- Line 3: Drum and Silence. The third line looks for truth through other people, now inspired, now disappointed. These swings teach it to tell its own understanding from others' influence; the trap is handing its balance over to other people's moods.
- Line 4: A Nearly Full Moon. The fourth line arrives at insight among like-minded people, but one day it has to go further alone. In the system, giving up the benefits of its circle helps it keep the clarity of the truth it has found.
- Line 5: A Truth That Binds. The fifth line is expected to give an answer that explains what is unclear and unites people. In the system, its influence rests on genuine conviction, not on fine words; the risk is passing off as revelation something it hasn't tested itself.
- Line 6: The Rooster's Crow. The sixth line sees the difference between a loud declaration and a truth quietly lived. Its example is thought to be not turning inspiration into a sermon: what is said too loudly loses weight.
Channels
Gate 61 is one half of a channel. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active — in one person or, in a couple, across two people.
- Channel 24-61 “Awareness” — the partner gate is 24 “Rationalization” in the Ajna. The channel gives a mind that returns again and again to questions that have no ready answers. In the system, clear understanding is sometimes born of this circling, but it can't be forced to appear.
All the channels are on the channels page, and Human Design compatibility shows what arises between the charts of two people.
An Honest Look at the Method
Human Design was created in 1987 by one man, Ra Uru Hu, and its claims have never been scientifically tested. We describe the rules of the system as they are and write the interpretations in our own words, not as knowledge about you.
