Nauthiz

Nauthiz is the tenth rune, sound “n.” Literally “need,” “constraint.”

Upright Position

Restriction and necessity: you have to do not what you want but what you must. Nauthiz describes a shortage — of money, time, freedom — and teaches you to make do with little. The rune has a useful side too: need mobilizes you and teaches fast, and limitations you understand help you stop spreading yourself thin.

Reversed Position

Need turned into a dead end: pointless endurance, living by sheer force of will, a recurring shortage. A reversed Nauthiz warns that you have mistaken for a necessity something you aren’t actually obliged to do.

In love and at work

In relationships, the upright rune means a bond held together by obligation, or a hard period you have to go through together; reversed, a dependence it’s time to name. At work — tight constraints, forced economizing, work you don’t love.

The rune’s advice

Do what is necessary and make do with little, without spreading yourself thin. But check whether this really is an obligation or whether you took on too much yourself.
