Hagalaz
Hagalaz is the ninth rune, sound “h.” Literally “hail.” It is symmetrical and has no reversed position.
Meaning
A destructive outside event that doesn’t depend on you: hail beats down on the crops no matter who planted them. Hagalaz means disrupted plans, a sudden obstacle, an ordeal — and in that sense it is unfavorable. But the rune has a second layer: hail melts and turns into water, meaning that after destruction comes cleansing. The classic interpretation advises not fighting the event but riding it out, and not making plans this week.
In love and at work
In relationships, Hagalaz means a crisis, a quarrel, circumstances intervening; on its own it doesn’t signal a breakup, but it tests the bond’s strength. At work — a breakdown, a cancellation, a lost order, deadlines missed for outside reasons. For a question about starting something, the answer is no.
The rune’s advice
Protect what matters most and don’t waste energy on what is out of your hands. When the storm has passed, see what it has cleared away.
