Thurisaz
Thurisaz is the third rune, sound “th,” as in the English word thing. Literally “thurs,” a giant; it is also associated with Thor’s hammer.
Upright Position
Protection through force and a warning at the same time. Thurisaz says: there is an obstacle or conflict ahead, but you have the means to respond. The classic meaning is the thorn: it guards and it also wounds. The rune advises not starting anything new right now, but dealing with whatever poses a threat.
Reversed Position
A danger you didn’t guard against, a rash action, a blow against your own side. A reversed Thurisaz often indicates that you yourself are creating the conflict, or points to an impulsive decision that will cost you dearly.
In love and at work
In relationships, the upright rune means tension that needs to be talked through; reversed, a quarrel you started or pressure from your partner. At work — a conflict of interest, tough negotiations, the need to defend your boundaries.
The rune’s advice
First strengthen your defenses, then move on. Respond to a threat firmly, but don’t strike first and don’t decide in the heat of the moment.
