Algiz
Algiz is the fifteenth rune, sound “z.” Literally “elk” or “protection.”
Upright Position
Protection and a timely warning of danger. Algiz is a sign of a protective charm: it doesn’t remove the threat, but it gives you the chance to notice it and get out of the way. The image is of an elk or of sedge: antlers and sharp leaves deter, but don’t attack themselves. The rune advises keeping your distance, not getting involved in other people’s conflicts, and trusting the feeling that something is off.
Reversed Position
Protection has weakened: you are open where you should be careful, or you fail to notice a warning sign. Reversed Algiz warns of trusting the wrong person, of a risk you underestimate, and of the temptation to get drawn into someone else’s conflict. Sometimes it is the opposite extreme: a wariness that pushes away even those who want to help.
In love and at work
In relationships, upright Algiz means protection from interference, but also caution: you haven’t fully opened up yet; reversed, it means vulnerability and an inability to hold your boundaries. At work — safety, legal protection, insurance, a reliable patron; reversed, the rune advises double-checking agreements and not relying on verbal promises. The rune is entirely unsuited to aggressive actions.
The rune’s advice
Listen to your inner alarm and don’t expose yourself without need. Hold your defenses, but don’t attack first.
