Blank Rune

The blank rune is a smooth tile with no symbol, known as Odin’s rune or the rune of fate. It doesn’t exist in the historical Elder Futhark: it appeared in 20th-century rune sets after Ralph Blum’s 1982 book.

What It Means

It is interpreted as the unknown: no answer is given, the wrong question was asked, or events haven’t taken shape yet. Some schools read the blank rune as a sign of fate and total change, others as “ask later.”

In practice it is an honest “no answer,” and that is its value: unlike the 24 runes of the Futhark, the blank rune doesn’t force you to stretch an interpretation to fit the situation.

Should You Use It?

The argument against: it has no historical basis, and it breaks the structure of the Futhark, where the 24 signs are tied to an alphabet and an order. The argument for: the possibility of getting “undetermined” is useful and reduces the temptation to bend the answer.

Our calculator works with the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark without the blank one — so the result always has content. If you read with your own set that includes a blank rune, treat it as an invitation to come back to the question later.

In a Spread

If the blank rune comes up in the future position, it is read as uncertainty: no one has made the decision yet. In the advice position — as “do nothing.” Next to Isa and Nauthiz it reinforces the theme of a pause; next to Dagaz, the theme of abrupt change.
