Chinese Zodiac by Year
The Chinese zodiac assigns your sign by birth year: twelve animals, five elements, and a yang or yin polarity. The calculator above handles the key subtlety: the year starts not on January 1 but around February 4.
How it's calculated
Three values are derived from the year.
- Animal: the remainder after dividing by 12. 1984 starts the cycle as a Rat year; the rest follow in order.
- Element: by the last digit. 4 and 5 are Wood, 6 and 7 Fire, 8 and 9 Earth, 0 and 1 Metal, 2 and 3 Water.
- Polarity: even years are yang, odd years are yin.
The key is to determine the year itself correctly. It begins not on January 1 but at the moment of Lichun, when the Sun passes 315° of the ecliptic. That's February 3, 4 or 5, depending on the year and the time zone. The calculator computes this moment from astronomical tables, and if you were born on the day the year changes, it shows both options with the exact time of the boundary.
Worked Example
February 14, 1988. The year has already begun (after February 4), so it is 1988. The remainder (1988 − 1984) mod 12 = 4 → the fifth animal, the Dragon. Last digit 8 → Earth. Even year → yang.
Result: Earth Dragon, yang.
January 20, 1988. The Chinese year has not begun yet, so 1987 is used: Rabbit, element Fire (last digit 7), odd year → yin. A Fire Rabbit. Three weeks apart on paper means two different signs.
February 4, 1988, is a boundary day: Lichun arrived at 17:43 Moscow time. Someone born in Moscow that morning is still a Fire Rabbit; someone born that evening is already an Earth Dragon.
What the result means
The animal describes character and how a person acts: the 12 signs are covered separately.
The element colors the sign: the 5 elements add growth, brightness, stability, firmness or flexibility to the character.
Together they make one of the 60 combinations of the cycle, and that combination is what gives a truly specific profile.
Table of Meanings
Coming years: 2026 — Fire Horse, 2027 — Fire Goat.
All 60 combinations with their birth years are in the cycle table. Sign compatibility is covered in a separate section that breaks down all 78 pairs.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the year start on February 4 when Chinese New Year is celebrated on a different day?
These are two different starting points. The holiday follows the lunar calendar and moves from year to year; the astrological year in Chinese tradition is counted from Lichun, the start of spring in the solar calendar.
What is “your own year” and why is it considered difficult?
Every twelve years the year of your animal comes around, called “ben ming nian.” Tradition considers it a tricky year and advises wearing red. There is no basis for this beyond tradition.
Does the birth month matter?
In the year-based horoscope, no. In BaZi, yes: there the month has its own sign.
Does it work?
There is no evidence that birth year affects character. The reverse effect is well known: more children are born in China in Dragon years, and their success is sometimes credited to the sign, although parental expectations are the real factor.
