丁 Ding — Yin Fire

Ding is the fourth Heavenly Stem, Yin Fire. If it's your day stem, BaZi sees you as the flame of a candle and a hearth: attentiveness, depth and a quiet light.

Image

In the Di Tian Sui, the verse on the Ding stem begins: “丁火柔中,內性昭融” — “Ding fire is gentle and balanced; inside, it is bright and warm.”

Ding is a candle flame, a hearth, a star in the night: a fire that shines for those close to it rather than for everyone. It doesn't dazzle; it warms and lights up what's nearby.

Personality

Ding means attentiveness and depth. Ding people shine for those around them: they look after others, sense moods, and can focus fully on a task or a person. They are subtler and more steadfast than they seem, but also more vulnerable than they let on.

Strengths: sensitivity and attention to people, constancy and devotion, the ability to focus, warm care.

Weak points: vulnerability, anxiety and a tendency to overthink, dependence on “fuel”: support and inspiration.

What Supports Ding

A flame needs fuel, above all Jia wood: the Di Tian Sui says that if Ding has its “true mother” (wood), it fears neither autumn nor winter. It also needs shelter from wind and damp. The classical image is a fire that is “strong but not fierce, weak but never going out.”

Each element has its own season: wood is strongest in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth in the transitional months between the seasons. Tradition sees a Day Master born in its own season as confident, and one born out of season as needing support; how much this matters is decided by an analysis of the whole chart.

At Work and in Relationships

At work, Ding does well where precision, care and depth matter: medicine, science, crafts, psychology, detailed work. In relationships, Ding brings devotion and warmth and values closeness and understanding.

This is an image, not a verdict: the rest of the chart — the Ten Gods, the Luck Pillars, the balance of elements — can shift the picture considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Which stem does Ding combine with?

With Ren (壬, Yang Water). This pair produces the Wood element. In a chart, it's a sign of attraction and alliance; if the Day Masters of two people form this pair, tradition sees a natural attraction between them.

Which stem does Ding clash with?

With Gui (癸, Yin Water): the two stems stand opposite each other in the cycle, and the element of one suppresses the element of the other. In a chart, this is a conflict of goals between the areas of life of the two pillars.

Where can I find out what my Day Master is?

In the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and it's marked separately in the chart table. You need your exact date of birth, and if you were born around midnight, your birth time as well.
