Symbolic Stars in BaZi
Symbolic Stars (神煞, shensha) are additional markers in a chart: special branches located from the day and year stems or branches. They aren't stars in the sky but traditional labels.
How They Are Found
Each star is one or more branches. They're calculated from the day stem (sometimes the year stem as well) or from the day and year branches. If such a branch is in the chart, the star “sits” in that pillar and speaks about its area of life.
| Star | How it's found | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Nobleman 天乙贵人 | from the day and year stems: 甲 戊 庚 → 丑 未; 乙 己 → 子 申; 丙 丁 → 亥 酉; 壬 癸 → 卯 巳; 辛 → 寅 午 | help in hard times: patrons, lucky encounters, support from others |
| Academic Star 文昌 | from the day stem: 甲 巳, 乙 午, 丙 申, 丁 酉, 戊 申, 己 酉, 庚 亥, 辛 子, 壬 寅, 癸 卯 | an aptitude for study, writing and exams, a love of knowledge |
| Prosperity (Lu) 禄 | from the day stem: 甲 寅, 乙 卯, 丙 巳, 丁 午, 戊 巳, 己 午, 庚 申, 辛 酉, 壬 亥, 癸 子 | steady income and health: your “own share” |
| Yang Blade 羊刃 | yang day stems only: 甲 卯, 丙 午, 戊 午, 庚 酉, 壬 子 | strength, drive, courage; traditionally, a risk of harshness, injuries and conflicts |
| Peach Blossom 桃花 | from the day and year branches: 申 子 辰 → 酉; 巳 酉 丑 → 午; 寅 午 戌 → 卯; 亥 卯 未 → 子 | charm, attractiveness, romance, attention from others |
| Travelling Horse 驿马 | from the day and year branches: 申 子 辰 → 寅; 巳 酉 丑 → 亥; 寅 午 戌 → 申; 亥 卯 未 → 巳 | movement: trips, moves, changes of place and occupation |
| Flowery Canopy 华盖 | from the day and year branches: 申 子 辰 → 辰; 巳 酉 丑 → 丑; 寅 午 戌 → 戌; 亥 卯 未 → 未 | a pull toward solitude, art, philosophy and spiritual practice |
| Void 空亡 | from the day pillar: the two branches left out of its group of ten in the sexagenary cycle; for example, for days from 甲子 to 癸酉, these are 戌 and 亥 | the pillar's area of life feels incomplete: much there takes more effort or comes later |
Where a Star Sits
A star colors the area of life of its pillar: Peach Blossom in the day pillar means charm in your personal life; in the month pillar, popularity at work and in your social circle. Stars also arrive with Luck Pillars and years, and for that time their theme comes alive.
How Seriously to Take Them
Stars are a secondary layer. Classical texts warn that destiny is determined by the Day Master and the balance of elements, while stars only add nuance. Hundreds of them are known; we show the eight most widely used, the ones the BaZi calculator finds.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't I have a single star?
Stars sit only on certain branches. If they're not in your chart, they can arrive with Luck Pillars and years.
Is the Void bad?
It's not a misfortune, just a marker: the area of life of a pillar with the Void feels incomplete, and results there take more effort. Many schools hold that a clash or a combination “fills” the Void.
Does Peach Blossom mean infidelity?
No. It means charm and attention from others. How it shows up, whether in popularity, art or love affairs, depends on the whole chart.
