辛 Xin — Yin Metal

Xin is the eighth Heavenly Stem, Yin Metal. If it's your day stem, BaZi sees you as a jewel: refinement, taste and dignity.

Image

In the Di Tian Sui, the verse on the Xin stem begins: “辛金軟弱,溫潤而清” — “Xin metal is soft, warm, moist and pure.”

Xin is a jewel, a piece of jewelry, a fine blade: metal that has already been through the fire and taken shape.

Personality

Xin means refinement, taste and self-respect. Xin people value quality, beauty and precision and notice details that others miss. They are sensitive to how they're judged and don't cope well with rudeness: a jewel doesn't like being thrown around.

Strengths: taste and a sense of beauty, precision and attention to detail, a striving for perfection, dignity.

Weak points: pride and touchiness, sensitivity to criticism, high demands on themselves and others.

What Supports Xin

A jewel needs clean water to wash over it: the Di Tian Sui says that Xin “fears heaps of earth and delights in plentiful water,” since under a layer of earth a jewel can't be seen. In the heat it needs moist earth, and in the cold, the warm fire of Ding.

Each element has its own season: wood is strongest in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth in the transitional months between the seasons. Tradition sees a Day Master born in its own season as confident, and one born out of season as needing support; how much this matters is decided by an analysis of the whole chart.

At Work and in Relationships

At work, Xin does well where quality and taste matter: design, jewelry making, finance, analytics, law, precision crafts. In relationships, Xin brings loyalty and attention to small things and values gentle treatment and recognition.

This is an image, not a verdict: the rest of the chart — the Ten Gods, the Luck Pillars, the balance of elements — can shift the picture considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Which stem does Xin combine with?

With Bing (丙, Yang Fire). This pair produces the Water element. In a chart, it's a sign of attraction and alliance; if the Day Masters of two people form this pair, tradition sees a natural attraction between them.

Which stem does Xin clash with?

With Yi (乙, Yin Wood): the two stems stand opposite each other in the cycle, and the element of one suppresses the element of the other. In a chart, this is a conflict of goals between the areas of life of the two pillars.

Where can I find out what my Day Master is?

In the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and it's marked separately in the chart table. You need your exact date of birth, and if you were born around midnight, your birth time as well.
