己 Ji — Yin Earth

Ji is the sixth Heavenly Stem, Yin Earth. If it's your day stem, BaZi sees you as farmland: caring, practicality and a gift for nurturing.

Image

In the Di Tian Sui, the verse on the Ji stem begins: “己土卑濕,中正蓄藏” — “Ji earth is low and moist; balanced, it holds and stores.”

Ji is farmland, garden soil: soft ground where everything grows. It doesn't tower like a mountain, but it takes in seeds and feeds.

Personality

Ji means caring and practicality. Ji people welcome and nourish those around them, along with projects and ideas. They are good at running a household, patient, and able to nurture what others would give up on. They are more modest than they could be, and they often take on other people's burdens.

Strengths: care and a gift for nurturing, practicality and good household sense, patience, flexibility in small things.

Weak points: a habit of taking on other people's burdens, worrying about small things, finding it hard to say “no.”

What Supports Ji

Farmland needs sun and gentle rain. The Di Tian Sui says that Ji earth “fears neither strong wood nor raging water,” but it grows dull when there is little fire: it needs warmth, and for “everything on it to flourish,” it needs the help of its own element and of fire.

Each element has its own season: wood is strongest in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth in the transitional months between the seasons. Tradition sees a Day Master born in its own season as confident, and one born out of season as needing support; how much this matters is decided by an analysis of the whole chart.

At Work and in Relationships

At work, Ji does well wherever things need nurturing and people need serving: education, medicine, services, household management, working with people. In relationships, Ji brings care; Ji needs to be needed, but also to receive care in return.

This is an image, not a verdict: the rest of the chart — the Ten Gods, the Luck Pillars, the balance of elements — can shift the picture considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Which stem does Ji combine with?

With Jia (甲, Yang Wood). This pair produces the Earth element. In a chart, it's a sign of attraction and alliance; if the Day Masters of two people form this pair, tradition sees a natural attraction between them.

Why doesn't Ji have a stem clash?

Earth is the central element of the cycle, and the classical table of stem clashes doesn't include it: only the pairs Jia–Geng, Yi–Xin, Bing–Ren and Ding–Gui clash.

Where can I find out what my Day Master is?

In the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and it's marked separately in the chart table. You need your exact date of birth, and if you were born around midnight, your birth time as well.
