The Day Master in BaZi

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the pillar of your birth day. BaZi reads the whole chart in relation to it: it stands for the person themselves, and the other characters for the people and circumstances around them.

How to Find It

The day stem changes every day following a continuous 60-day cycle, so the Day Master doesn't depend on the year or month of birth. You need the exact date and, if the person was born around midnight, the time as well: by default, the day in BaZi changes at 23:00.

The easiest way is to build a chart in the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is marked in the day pillar, and its interpretation is below the chart.

Yang stems are usually described as direct and open, yin stems as flexible and deep. These are two poles of the same element, not value judgments.

The Day Master Isn't the Whole Chart

Personality by day stem is a starting point. Classical texts immediately look at the season the Day Master was born in, how much of its element is in the chart and what supports it: the same Yang Wood born in spring and in winter reads differently.

That's why a stem's description is best read as an image, not a verdict. The details come from the rest of the chart; their meanings are collected on the Ten Gods page.

Where the Images Come From

The images of the stems come from the classical treatise Di Tian Sui (滴天髓). It is attributed to Liu Ji (14th century) and is known through the commentary of Ren Tieqiao (19th century). It has a short verse for each stem: a tree that reaches for the sky, a sun that does not fear frost, rain that reaches the Heavenly Ford. The opening lines of these verses are quoted on the stem pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find my Day Master without a birth time?

Yes, unless you were born around midnight. The day stem depends only on the date; the time is needed to tell which day a birth between 23:00 and midnight belongs to.

Why doesn't my Day Master match my year sign?

They're different things. The year sign (Horse, Goat and so on) describes your generation and your outward side; the Day Master describes you yourself. In BaZi, the Day Master is what matters most.

Which is better, yin or yang?

Neither: they are two poles of the same element. Yang stems are more direct and open, yin stems more flexible and deep, but this isn't a value judgment.
