壬 Ren — Yang Water

Ren is the ninth Heavenly Stem, Yang Water. If it's your day stem, BaZi sees you as a river and the ocean: mobility, wide horizons and a lively mind.

Image

In the Di Tian Sui, the verse on the Ren stem begins: “壬水通河,能洩金氣” — “Ren water flows like a river and carries away the strength of metal.”

Ren is big water: a river, the ocean, a current. Its strength lies in movement: in the words of the same treatise, it “flows round and round and never stagnates.”

Personality

Ren means mobility, wide horizons and a lively mind. Ren people love movement, travel, big plans and new knowledge. They are quick-witted and sociable and catch on fast. It's hard to keep them within limits, and dull routine puts out their spark.

Strengths: quick wits and broad views, energy and enterprise, sociability, the ability to adapt to change.

Weak points: inconstancy, intolerance of routine and limits, a habit of taking on everything at once.

What Supports Ren

A river needs banks, the Wu earth that channels its flow; without them, the water spills over. The Di Tian Sui warns that when Ren water is strong and well fed, it “surges up to the sky and rushes across the land.” Metal nourishes it, and wood gives it an outlet.

Each element has its own season: wood is strongest in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth in the transitional months between the seasons. Tradition sees a Day Master born in its own season as confident, and one born out of season as needing support; how much this matters is decided by an analysis of the whole chart.

At Work and in Relationships

At work, Ren does well where movement and scope are needed: trade, logistics, travel, media, science, international affairs. In relationships, Ren brings liveliness and generosity and values freedom.

This is an image, not a verdict: the rest of the chart — the Ten Gods, the Luck Pillars, the balance of elements — can shift the picture considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Which stem does Ren combine with?

With Ding (丁, Yin Fire). This pair produces the Wood element. In a chart, it's a sign of attraction and alliance; if the Day Masters of two people form this pair, tradition sees a natural attraction between them.

Which stem does Ren clash with?

With Bing (丙, Yang Fire): the two stems stand opposite each other in the cycle, and the element of one suppresses the element of the other. In a chart, this is a conflict of goals between the areas of life of the two pillars.

Where can I find out what my Day Master is?

In the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and it's marked separately in the chart table. You need your exact date of birth, and if you were born around midnight, your birth time as well.
