戊 Wu — Yang Earth
Wu is the fifth Heavenly Stem, Yang Earth. If it's your day stem, BaZi sees you as a mountain: reliability, stability and patience.

In the Di Tian Sui, the verse on the Wu stem begins: “戊土固重,既中且正” — “Wu earth is solid and heavy; it stands centered and upright.”
Wu is a mountain, a fortress wall, a great expanse of dry earth. It doesn't move, but everything around it leans on it.
Personality
Wu means reliability and stability. Wu people are a mainstay for those around them: they take responsibility, keep their word and don't fuss. They change slowly and don't like to be rushed. People trust them and come to them for a sense of calm.
Strengths: stability and calm, reliability and responsibility, patience and endurance, the ability to keep and protect.
Weak points: inertia and slowness, reserve (it's hard to tell what's going on inside), persistence where flexibility is needed.
What Supports Wu
A mountain needs sun and water for anything to grow on it: the Di Tian Sui writes that “with moisture, all things live; with dryness, they sicken.” Too much fire scorches Wu earth, and too much water washes it away. It does best at rest: the same treatise advises it to “fear clashes and love stillness.”
Each element has its own season: wood is strongest in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth in the transitional months between the seasons. Tradition sees a Day Master born in its own season as confident, and one born out of season as needing support; how much this matters is decided by an analysis of the whole chart.
At Work and in Relationships
At work, Wu does well where stability and trust are needed: management, finance, real estate, security, large projects. In relationships, Wu brings reliability and values peace and loyalty.
This is an image, not a verdict: the rest of the chart — the Ten Gods, the Luck Pillars, the balance of elements — can shift the picture considerably.
Frequently asked questions
Which stem does Wu combine with?
With Gui (癸, Yin Water). This pair produces the Fire element. In a chart, it's a sign of attraction and alliance; if the Day Masters of two people form this pair, tradition sees a natural attraction between them.
Why doesn't Wu have a stem clash?
Earth is the central element of the cycle, and the classical table of stem clashes doesn't include it: only the pairs Jia–Geng, Yi–Xin, Bing–Ren and Ding–Gui clash.
Where can I find out what my Day Master is?
In the BaZi calculator: the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and it's marked separately in the chart table. You need your exact date of birth, and if you were born around midnight, your birth time as well.
