Pythagorean Square

The Pythagorean square, also called the psychomatrix, sorts the digits of a birth date into nine cells: character, energy, knowledge, health, logic, work, luck, duty and memory. What counts is how many digits land in each cell — that is the result.

Calculation

How it's calculated

Here's how it works.

  • Write out the date as one string: 14.02.1988 → 14021988.
  • Add up all the digits: this is the first working number, 1+4+0+2+1+9+8+8 = 33.
  • Add up the digits of the first number: 3+3 = 6, this is the second working number.
  • Subtract twice the first digit of the birth day from the first number: 33 − 2×1 = 31, this is the third number. If the day is from 1 to 9, the day's digit itself is taken. If the first number is smaller than twice that digit — as happens for people born after 2000 — the difference is taken without the minus sign.
  • Add up the digits of the third number: 3+1 = 4, this is the fourth number. The digits are added only once, even if the result is a two-digit number.
  • Write out the date and all four working numbers in a row, dropping the zeros.
  • Sort the digits into the cells: all the ones go in the first, the twos in the second, and so on.

What matters is not the digit itself but how many of it are in the cell: three ones and a single one describe different people.

What the cells mean

CellGoverns
1Character, willpower, ego
2Energy, stamina
3Knowledge, interest in exact subjects
4Health, physical robustness
5Logic and intuition
6Work, manual skill
7Luck, talent
8Duty to others
9Memory and intellect

An empty cell does not mean the quality is absent: it is read as a task the person works through on their own, without a ready-made predisposition.

Rows, columns and diagonals

Besides the individual cells, the psychomatrix is read by lines — the digit counts along its rows, columns and diagonals.

  • Columns: the first (1-2-3) is self-esteem, the second (4-5-6) is home and family life, the third (7-8-9) is talent.
  • Rows: the first (1-4-7) is determination, the second (2-5-8) is devotion to family, the third (3-6-9) is stability.
  • Diagonals: 1-5-9 is spirituality, 3-5-7 is temperament.

The more digits in a line, the more pronounced the quality. A line with one or two digits is considered weak.

Where the method comes from

This square has nothing to do with Pythagoras: the Pythagoreans did study numbers, but there is no psychomatrix in any ancient source.

The system in its current form was described in the 1990s by Alexander Alexandrov, and it spread through the Russian-speaking world from his work. So it is more accurate to call it "Alexandrov's psychomatrix" and to treat the name "Pythagorean square" as a nod to tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Why do different calculators show a different number of digits?

It depends on whether zeros are included and how the fourth working number is calculated. We drop the zeros and follow Alexandrov's method.

Does the psychomatrix change with age?

No, it is calculated from the birth date alone.

Which matters more, the cells or the lines?

The cells give the details, the lines give the overall picture. It's easier to start with the lines.
