Kabbalah Numerology
Kabbalah numerology calculates from the name alone and links the result to the Tree of Life (the Sephirot). The range of values here is wider than usual — from 1 to 400, following the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
What this method is
It rests on the idea that a person's name carries their essence, and that the letters of the name correspond to numbers and paths on the Tree of Life. The date of birth plays no part in the calculation at all: the Kabbalistic tradition regards it as a circumstance, not an essence.
In the popular European version, the name is converted into numbers using a simplified table and reduced to a value from 1 to 400, and then its correspondence to one of the 22 paths of the Tree is looked up.
How to Calculate by Hand
- Write down the name the person goes by in everyday life.
- Assign each letter a numerical value using a table of correspondences with the Hebrew alphabet.
- Add up the values.
- Match the resulting number to a path on the Tree of Life and to the Tarot Major Arcanum that corresponds to that path.
We don't have a calculator yet: the tables mapping Cyrillic to the Hebrew alphabet differ so much between schools that an automatic calculation would give false precision.
Limitations of the method
Here it's worth being honest twice over.
First, authentic Kabbalah is a complex religious and philosophical tradition, not a system for making predictions from a name. It is studied for years, usually in a religious context, and numerological simplifications relate to it roughly the way a newspaper horoscope relates to astronomy.
Second, the Cyrillic alphabet doesn't map onto this system unambiguously: the number of letters differs and the sounds don't match. Any correspondence table here is a convention invented in the 20th century.
