Lo Shu Grid
The Lo Shu grid places the digits of a birth date on the 4-9-2 / 3-5-7 / 8-1-6 magic square. Filled and empty cells reveal strengths and weaknesses, and complete lines form arrows of strength.
How the square works
The Lo Shu is the oldest known magic square: every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Legend has it that its pattern was seen on the shell of a turtle that emerged from the Luo River.
The arrangement of the numbers is fixed:
| 4 | 9 | 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 | 7 |
| 8 | 1 | 6 |
The calculation uses the digits of the birth date without zeros. Each digit goes into its own cell, appearing there as many times as it occurs in the date.
Arrows of strength and weakness
If an entire line — three cells in a row — is filled, it is called an arrow of strength. An empty line is called an arrow of weakness.
| Line | Arrow of strength | Arrow of weakness |
|---|---|---|
| 4-9-2 | Clear mind, planning | Absent-mindedness |
| 3-5-7 | Emotional stability | Vulnerability |
| 8-1-6 | Practicality, hands-on skill | Disorganization |
| 4-3-8 | Composure | Chaos in one's affairs |
| 9-5-1 | Determination | Self-doubt |
| 2-7-6 | Creativity | Little interest in beauty |
| 4-5-6 | Willpower | Disappointments |
| 2-5-8 | Sensitivity, intuition | Distrust of intuition |
The tradition reads arrows of weakness not as a verdict but as an area the person develops consciously.
What the Digits Mean
Each cell is also read on its own. The meanings below are the ones commonly accepted in this tradition, with no claim to being an exact portrait.
- 1 — the ability to express yourself, to speak up for what is yours.
- 2 — sensitivity to people, intuition.
- 3 — memory, imagination, a lively mind.
- 4 — order, practicality, patience.
- 5 — balance and willpower, the center of the square.
- 6 — home, caring for loved ones, skilled hands.
- 7 — lessons learned through your own experience.
- 8 — attention to detail, neatness.
- 9 — idealism, striving for a great goal.
Repeating a digit strengthens its quality: two eights are a noticeable trait, not just a tendency. An empty cell doesn't mean the quality is absent: it's an area the person develops on their own.
How it differs from the Pythagorean square
Both systems sort a date into nine cells, but the numbers are arranged differently: in the Pythagorean square the cells run in sequence, while in the Lo Shu they follow the magic square. The meanings of the cells don't match either.
It's best not to mix them: the results don't translate from one to the other. The Lo Shu square itself is ancient and tied to feng shui — the same square is used for the flying stars — while reading a date of birth with it, arrows included, took shape in 20th-century numerology.
