The twenty day signs of the Tzolkin are twenty images of the day, from Imix the crocodile to Ahau the sun. The day sign sets the theme of the day and, according to Maya tradition, the character of a person born on that day.

In Maya tradition, the day sign of one's birth was considered part of a person's name and destiny, roughly like the zodiac sign in the European tradition.

The Aztec calendar is built on the same 260-day cycle, but with its own day names. The lunar calendar is about a different cycle, a lunar one rather than a ritual one.
