Lunar Haircut Calendar
The lunar haircut calendar rests on one rule: after a cut on the waxing Moon, hair grows back faster; on the waning Moon, more slowly. On top of that, the character of the lunar day is added.
How to Choose a Day
The basis is the phase. If you want your hair to grow back faster, get it cut on the waxing Moon; if you want to visit the hairdresser less often, on the waning Moon.
The second layer is the lunar day. Tradition considers the 5th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 21st, 27th and 28th lunar days favorable for haircuts. Unfavorable ones are the 9th, 15th, 19th, 23rd and 29th, the same days that are considered difficult in general. The 1st and 30th lunar days fall at the new moon, and at the new moon, as the table below says, haircuts are not advised at all.
The third layer is the sign the Moon is in. Haircuts are recommended on Leo and Virgo days and discouraged on Pisces and Cancer days. This level requires ephemerides and is not yet included in our calendar.
Table by Phase
| Phase | What tradition says |
|---|---|
| New Moon | Haircuts are not advised at all |
| Waxing Moon | Growth speeds up; good for short cuts |
| Full Moon | Considered a powerful day; acceptable, but not for coloring |
| Waning Moon | Growth slows down; good for keeping your length |
An Honest Look at the Method
Research shows no link between the Moon's phase and the rate of hair growth. Hair grows about a centimeter a month regardless of the calendar.
So this is a planning tradition, not biology. If it helps you remember to get a haircut on time, that is exactly how useful it is.
